Semester 1

FASH 1110 - Intro to Fashion Business

This course is an introduction to the terminology and fundamentals of the fashion industry and examines the development of merchandise from concept to consumer. Students trace the history of the industry, as well as the contributions of past and present fashion innovators. Emphasis is placed on the importance of the industry in the global marketplace.

MRKT 1550 - Marketing

Students are introduced to core marketing activities including market segmentation, market research, consumer behavior, product strategy, pricing, promotion and distribution. Principles, policies and practices used by manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers are covered. The factors of consumer behavior and motivation are analyzed to provide an understanding of market planning. The system of distribution of goods from the producer to the consumer will also be discussed.

ENGL 1100 - English Composition

English Composition is designed to help students further develop skills in writing, reading and critical thinking. The course emphasizes narrowing a topic, constructing a thesis, organizing an essay, developing an argument, writing analytical responses to readings and effectively utilizing APA documentation. Students will practice several forms of writing: process (multiple drafts of one paper), timed writings, critique essays and analysis essays. Critical reading is an essential component of effective writing. In order to develop critical reading and thinking skills, students will read examples of successful writing. The skills students cultivate in this class are applicable to all college courses and to any future writing or research tasks.

TECH 1310 - Business Spreadsheets

This course provides a hands-on approach to spreadsheet analysis, performance management and graphics on the computer. Students learn how to enter data, develop formulas, correct mistakes, use special formula functions, print worksheets, use database features, combine files and graphics. Upon completion of the course students should have the necessary tools to develop worksheets for such applications as financial planning, budgets and cost projections.

EECM 1801 - Industry Exploration Seminar

The Industry Exploration Seminar is broken into three primary components: seminars, guest lectures, and field trip experiences. Students will focus on understanding the breadth of opportunities available in the fashion and related industries; develop introductory job search skills (including basic interview techniques and resume and cover letter writing) as well as tools for researching the industry; and will begin exploring personal interests and abilities.

LIMS 1000 - First Year Experience

This course is designed to introduce students to the numerous departments and resources offered at LIM College and to ease their transition from high school to college life. Students will strengthen their study, note-taking and time-management skills. In addition, topics such as diversity and nutrition will be discussed. First Year Experience Seminar seeks to help freshmen embrace responsibility for their lives and make informed decisions about their futures. Required of all first-time freshmen or students who have transferred in fewer than 13 credits.

Semester 2

MATH 1100 - College Algebra

This course establishes a foundation of mathematical modeling. Topics that will be covered include linear, quadratic, power, exponential and logarithmic functions. Topics are developed in a practical context with applications to business and economic concepts such as profit, revenue, cost, break-even analysis, supply and demand and depreciation. Systems of equations and inequalities, matrices and linear programming will also be covered.

COMM 1500 - Introduction to Mass Media

This course is an introduction to the study of mass media in today’s society.  Students will learn to understand the human social condition by examining bodies of knowledge associated with analyzing past and present expressions of cultural beliefs, behaviors and experiences while critically exploring media to gain an understanding of the historical, economic, regulatory and ethical implications of the changing mass media landscape.

Prerequisite: English Composition (ENGL 1100).

FASH 2315 - Fashion Styling Essentials

In this introductory course students will explore the fashion stylist’s role in the industry. Responsibilities from researching and shopping the market along with selecting merchandise for work with models for photographic shoots, commercials, shows and events will be discussed in both a classroom and studio setting.

COMM 1110 - Public Speaking

Effective communication is essential to personal, academic and professional accomplishment. The purpose of this course is to promote a more competent and confident self-presentation by increasing the student’s ability to generate, organize and present ideas. Public speaking is based on a comprehensive foundation of skills including listening, critical thinking, academic research, audience analysis and language development, as well as nonverbal dynamics. By learning these skills, students will become more accomplished communicators.

FAM 2020 - Creative Computing

This course prepares students for career opportunities in multi-platform arenas in both physical and virtual environments. These include advertising, packaging and design for print, retail and exhibition design, interactive and social media, and other related fields. Concept development is explored in-depth through logo design and branding in order to produce impactful student portfolios that will resonate with potential employers. Main points of study are the components of composition and typography layout, particularly in relation to photography and illustration. The class will also investigate the seamless merging of vector and raster based imagery utilizing current software tools. Students will develop and define their own design concepts, logos and compositions into diverse media applications with a focus on experimentation and visual narrative. Synthesizing innovative approaches to graphic design solutions will be highly encouraged, particularly in the incorporation of new technologies.

EECM 1802 or 1803 - Industry Exploration Internship

EECM 1802 - The Industry Exploration Internship: Retail is an opportunity for students to develop a deeper understanding of the fashion industry through an applied learning experience in a retail setting. The primary focus of this internship is to provide students the opportunity to see how the fashion industry works at the point where the brand meets the customer. Students will be required to complete a total of 130 hours at the internship site and should therefore expect to dedicate approximately 10-15 hours per week to this internship. The classroom component of this course consists of reflective sessions to discuss internship progress. At the end of their internship, students will participate in an exit interview process and submit a written summary of their experience outlining how they gained deeper insights into the fashion industry

EECM 1803​ - Since many students come to LIM College with significant retail experience, Industry Exploration Internship: Corporate provides an opportunity to explore the nature of the fashion industry from a different angle. This course is open through application only via the Department of Experiential Education and Career Management (EECM). To qualify for WORK 125, students must have a minimum of 24 credits completed on their LIM College transcript, and show that they have gained at least one year of recent and significant experience working in a retail setting. Additionally, they must submit a dossier which will include a written letter of recommendation from their most recent supervisor describing their duties and responsibilities. Students will be expected to complete a corporate internship in an area they wish to explore to expand their knowledge of the fashion/business industry. Students will be required to complete a total of 130 hours at the internship site and should therefore expect to dedicate approximately 10-15 hours per week to this internship. The classroom component of this course consists of reflective sessions to discuss internship progress. At the end of their internship, students will participate in an exit interview process and submit a written summary of their experience outlining how they gained deeper insight into the fashion industry.

Semester 3

COMM 2010 - Critical Thinking

The human community has a legacy of asking questions. Curiosity is the foundation for all advances in science, philosophy, psychology, archaeology, literature, art, history and commerce. We share in that legacy with our own questioning in our personal and professional lives. In this way, we are natural researchers. The purpose of this course is to take this everyday human trait and expand it to achieve academic and professional success. Through readings, library research, discussions and writing assignments, this course helps students develop the critical thinking skills necessary for research. It includes the ability to read for comprehension of ideas, to write with clarity of purpose, and to research for deepening knowledge. To accomplish this, students will learn how to construct research plans, use library databases, analyze arguments, incorporate the APA style, and develop a distinct critical and creative voice. This is the purpose of academic research-it helps us move from mere opinion to an informed understanding. As educated citizens we must cultivate those skills that enable us to seek information, evaluate sources, reflect on alternatives and pose a course of action. These essential skills will foster success in college courses and contribute to professional development.

MRKT 2710 - Consumer Behavior

This course examines the key factors that influence consumer decision-making. To this effect, both internal and external influences are discussed. Internal influences such as consumer motivation, personality, perception, learning and attitude formation are examined in detail. External factors including social, cultural and cross-cultural determinants of consumer decision-making are studied. The course also includes a discussion on the roles of ethics and social responsibility in the context of consumption. The course will give students an appreciation of how consumer characteristics and consumption patterns will impact marketing decisions, and how this knowledge can be used to develop effective marketing programs.

ARTS 2220 - Introduction to Film

Students watch and discuss American and foreign films that have made a significant impact on society. Through viewing and critical analysis, students develop a critical vocabulary that helps foster an understanding of the film medium.

VMER 3014 - Fashion Photography

Students learn the basics of fashion photography in a studio setting. Topics include equipment, staff, technique, and the creative processes used in producing commercially and artistically successful photographs for use in print media.

EECM 2801 - Career Building Seminar

The Career Building Seminar is broken into three primary components: seminars, guest lectures and field trip experiences. Students will focus on developing professional goals and objectives, with a primary focus on understanding how their strengths can be leveraged to take advantage of career opportunities in the marketplace, as well steps they can take to address individual challenges. Students will also continue to develop the job search skills introduced in Industry Exploration Seminar.

Semester 4

COMM 2328 - New Media: Writing, Editing, Visuals

This course is for students who wish to prepare themselves to work as writers, editors and production managers in digital media companies. In today’s public relations, branding, online fashion magazine and blogging companies, everyone producing content tends to do a bit of everything: text, visuals, research, business strategic thinking and more. After discussing techniques, standards and principles, most class sessions will be workshops or modeled on the editors’ meetings of a magazine. Students will also solve case studies and explore the business and sociological significance of new media. To do so, we will read recent articles about technology and creativity in music, visual arts and business. We will also explore skeptical and critical analyses of digital communication. This reading will be supplemented by the discussion of online reporting standards in Columbia Journalism Review, analyses of the new media business by the Pew Trust and the Harvard Center for Media and Society, and the lively discussion of the role of fashion journalists and bloggers in the fashion industry press. Assignments will include an individualized reading plan developed with the instructor in an area of the media, a profile article of a well-known person, analysis of a media issue such as privacy or free speech, and a visual project in photography or video.

FAME 3521 - Video Production and Editing

This course serves as an introduction to basic production techniques and equipment, including film and/or videotape production, along with an exploration of cinematic elements and visual language. There will also be an introduction to non-linear editing techniques, hardware, digitizing, logging and some special effects.

MRKT 2714 - Integrated Marketing Communications

A study of how to plan, develop and execute integrated marketing communications programs across the traditional marketing mix using the tools of advertising, direct marketing, sales promotion, public relations, special events marketing, online advertising, and personal selling.

EECM 2802 - Career Building Internship

The primary focus of the Career Building Internship is to provide students with an opportunity to develop their professional objectives more fully. The internship is an opportunity for students to explore the fit of a career path and gain insight into the skills and abilities required to be truly successful in that career. Students will maintain a journal which will provide a foundation for a written report. In addition to the written report, students will participate in an exit interview and explore how the internship experience helped them better understand how their personal interests and academic experiences complement their professional objectives. Students will be required to complete a total of 130 hours on the internship site and should expect to dedicate approximately 10-15 hours per week to their internship. The classroom component of this course consists of reflective sessions to discuss internship progress.

Semester 5

MATH 2610 - Survey of Statistics

This course provides an introduction to statistical analysis with emphasis in business applications. It accentuates conceptual understanding and computation of descriptive and inferential statistics through a hands-on approach. Spreadsheet software is used to facilitate the coverage of some topics and enrich students’ understanding. The emphasis on this course is interpreting, reporting and presenting statistical analysis results.

COMM 3411 - The New Journalism

This course teaches the basics of professional reporting and writing for print and electronic media. The course will help prepare students to work in communications, publications, public relations and news media departments of companies. Class work will concentrate on generating story ideas, supporting them with research, interviews, on-the-scene observation, and writing drafts to submit to news organizations. Article content will focus on, but not be limited to, fashion and cultural events in New York City. The course also stresses the ethics of journalism and professional protocol for interacting with figures in business and the arts.
Prerequisite: Writing Essentials or successful placement into English Composition

BUSN 3332 - Intellectual Property

Through a review of the relevant provisions of U.S. law and multilateral treaties, this course covers the international components of copyrights, patents, trademarks and other forms of intellectual property rights. The course also examines recent developments in the European Union and problems of enforcing intellectual property rights in developing countries. 

Prerequistie: English Composition (ENGL 1100).

COMM 3328 - Intermediate New Media: Writing, Editing, Visuals

Students in the Intermediate class will build on the writing, editing, blogging and visual skills developed in the introductory New Media class. Students will be required to write articles to be published in all media versions (print, social media, video, podcasts, etc.) of the school’s magazine, The Lexington Line, on a weekly basis. They will not only write the content, but build the blog posts, learn light HTML, develop field reporting and interviewing skills, develop skills as photographers and photo editors, and adhere to a strict production schedule. In the process, they will be building a portfolio of published work that can be used to attain future writing jobs. Students will learn to distinguish between best practices when writing and editing for online versus print media and will begin experimenting with long form journalism. They will study SEO best practices and work closely with magazine editors (and students in the Advanced class) to develop and execute ideas for articles and editorial spreads.

MRKT 2650 - The Power of the Brand

As business becomes more global, the need to strategically place and define a company’s position within the industry and consumers’ minds becomes paramount. This course will analyze the components that go into a branding strategy, why they must constantly be reviewed, and how the firm has to be prepared to adapt its strategies to properly and continuously serve the target market and remain competitive.

Semester 7

COMM 2603 - Global Media

This course explores the phenomenon of global communication, specifically the wide range of activities associated with interpersonal communication, social media, and public media, as well as the technical infrastructures that enable it. Given that global media transcends power, class, race, ethnicity and culture issues unique to individual nation-states, it relates to practices (forms and genres), human issues and concerns (e.g., human rights, laws, poverty, the environment, pandemics, financial crises) that cut across them. Global media stresses the commonality of issues that require collective action all over the world, including in one’s home country. This course examines the role of media professionals and firms as a result of the influence of the global and global-regional economic, political, social, and cultural contexts within which they operate.

Prerequisite: English Composition (ENGL 1100), Intro to Mass Media (FAME 1200), Critical Thinking (COMM 2010).

COMM 4328 - Advanced New Media: Writing, Editing, Visuals

Students in Advanced New Media will engage in an in-depth study of the present media moment and will fully integrate themselves into the media landscape. In addition to overseeing and managing production of this semester’s print edition of The Lexington Line, students will be trained in pitching article ideas to print and online magazines other than The Lexington Line. Articles previously published in The Lexington Line as required in Intermediate New Media can serve as a publishing background as students make actual article pitches to prominent magazines with wider readerships. They will complete an in-depth, well-researched, long form article along with numerous shorter pieces. They will maintain a strict production schedule, make final decisions about articles and editorial spreads, and develop marketing strategies. Students will also work in teams to complete a video project that involves writing scripts, interviewing on-camera, filming, editing and posting videos online; they will ultimately learn all the skills necessary to complete every aspect of a blog post or online magazine article. 

Prerequisites: English Composition (ENGL 1100), Critical Thinking: Reading, Writing, and Research (COMM 2010), Intermediate New Media Writing Seminar (ENGL 3328), Creative Computing (FAME 1205), Video Production & Editing (FAME 2100).

PHIL 3650 - Ethics

This course is designed to assist students in approaching, questioning and refining their moral commitments and values, their understanding of the reasoned application of ethical principles, and, ultimately, their ethical practice in both their personal and professional lives. The course draws on the works of Plato, Aristotle, Rousseau, Kant and others to introduce students to the foundations of the ethical tradition. Critical thinking and its expression are central to the course.

EECM 480A - Senior Co-op Preparation

In preparation for the Senior Co-op students will discuss career planning and self-evaluation, prepare resumes, cover and thank you letters, and practice interviewing skills. Students will be presented with the procedures, rules and regulations which govern the Senior Semester.

Semester 8

ECM 480B - Senior Co-op

The Co-op component in the Senior Semester is designed to expose the student to a significant and broadening full-semester internship experience in the fashion or related industries, usually in an area relevant to the student’s career goals and experience. The Co-op gives students an opportunity to evaluate, appraise and relate actual professional experience to concepts learned in the classroom. At the end of the semester students are evaluated and graded by their supervisor. Additionally, students attend reflective class sessions conducted by their Co-op mentor. Students are also required to declare three internship-related learning objectives and maintain a journal to document how these objectives were achieved. Students must give a presentation highlighting their experiences and achievements and submit this journal for review. Final semester senior year.

FAME 4910 - Fashion Media Senior Capstone

The major in Fashion Media is a series of steps that starts with a broad foundation in the humanities and progresses to the development of creative production skills, along with the development and application of media, business and marketing knowledge. The Fashion Media Capstone is the final step in this process: developing and executing a creative media project with supporting media, business and marketing strategies. Students bring together their academic and professional experiences to develop a creative execution, develop strategies to launch it and design a tactical implementation plan to realize the strategy. Working individually and in groups, students will evaluate scenarios and case studies

in the creative industries, evaluating strategies, plans and activities for real and simulated companies. Finally, students will experience first-hand how to evaluate creative production activities and make contingency plans to address real-world market changes. Students will also work on developing their portfolios throughout the course.
