Seasonal Allergies

Each spring, individuals across the United States suffer from seasonal allergies. During the act of pollinating, trees and plants produce billions of individual pollen grains (see image 1). When pollen counts are high, individuals can breathe in pollen grains, and have pollen absorbed into eyes, nose and mouth, creating varying symptoms. The 2017 pollen count, specifically in the Northeast U.S., is projected to be moderate to high (See image 2).

Symptoms

  • Sneezing
  • Nasal Congestion
  • Runny Nose
  • Watery Eyes
  • Itchy Throat and Eyes
  • Wheezing

 Prevention and Management

  • Take over the counter allergy medications regularly – take medications ahead of symptoms
  • Review pollen counts and limit outdoor activity when counts are high
  • Keep windows closed at home and on the go to limit the amount of pollen inside your home or vehicle
  • Shower and change clothes after outdoor activities

Nasal Cleansing

Nasal irritation may by reduced by rinsing the nasal passages with saline solutions. This will remove dust, pollen and other debris and may relieve symptoms associated with allergies, colds, flu and infections. Below are instructions and a video on how to use a Nasal Cleansing (Neti) Pot.

  • Use either boiled and cooled tap water, distilled, or sterile water purchased from a store
  • Follow instructions on neti pot or spray bottle
  • Lean over a sink, and tilt your head sideways
  • Insert the saline solution into your upper nostril and pour solution into nostril until liquid drains through the lower nostril
  • Repeat procedure on the other nostril
