Flu Prevention

Influenza (Flu) is a contagious respiratory illness that impacts millions of Americans each year. The Flu is typically spread by sick individuals via sneeze or cough. Flu season runs from the beginning of November through the end of March. Below is a list of Flu signs and symptoms along with tips to help you avoid catching the Flu this season. Additionally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) website (https://www.cdc.gov/flu/weekly/usmap.htm) provides a weekly update of estimated Flu cases by State (see Figure 1).

 

Signs and Symptoms

  • High Fever
  • Body Aches
  • Headache
  • Extreme Tiredness
  • Cough
  • Runny or Stuffy Nose
  • Vomiting or Upset Stomach

 

Response

If you are experiencing Flu-like symptoms you should seek medical attention to avoid prolonged illness or complications. If you are sick or suspect you may have the Flu, you should stay home to avoid getting others sick.

 

Prevention

  • Receive Influenza vaccination (CDC top recommendation)
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap or sanitizer
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth
  • Avoid individuals who are sick (remain at least 3 feet apart if possible)
  • Cover your mouth/nose when you cough or sneeze
  • Disinfect common surfaces
    • Door knobs
    • Light switches
    • Keyboards/Mouse
    • Phones
    • Keys
  • The personal items of any individual who is sick should be separated away from others (i.e. clothing and personal electronics)
