LIM College Fire Drill Information
Fire drills are held regularly throughout the year. They are taken seriously. No use of cell phones or talking is allowed during the drills.
The Townhouse (12 East 53rd St.)
The fire alarm consists of a loud horn blaring continuously. If in a classroom, follow the instructor’s directions. If in a non-class area, with no faculty or administration available, such as a bathroom or lounge, follow the posted instructions without waiting for a faculty or staff member. During the evacuation process, there should be no sauntering. Leave your area immediately and proceed to the street. Follow the directions of the Fire Safety Director, keeping the front of the building clear until the Fire Safety Director indicates that you may re-enter the building. In order to exit the building promptly and in an orderly fashion, the following procedures should be followed:
Lower level offices: Exit up to the first floor via the main stairwell from the lower level
Classrooms 5331, 5332, 5333, 5341, 5342, 5343, 5361, Faculty Offices and Executive Offices: Exit down to the first floor via the main stairwell in the center of the building
Classrooms 5351, 5352, 5344, 5345, Offices of Admissions, Student Financial Services, Human Resources and the Student Lounge: Exit down to the first floor via the fire escape and through FashionOpolis
Instructors will open the fire escape doors located at either the front or back of the classrooms and have the students exit onto the fire escape, proceeding immediately by the outside fire stairs to the ground level, thru FashionOpolis and out onto the street. Instructors will follow the last student, closing the exit door behind them.
Maxwell Hall (216 East 45th St.)
The fire alarm consists of a loud whooping sound. At the sound of the alarm, remain quiet and listen for instructions. The designated fire warden on each floor will call the Fire Safety Director from the fire warden call box. An announcement will be made over the public announcement system notifying occupants of which exit to use when vacating the building.
Fifth Avenue (545 Fifth Ave.)
Scenario One: Once the fire alarm sounds, the building Fire Safety Director will make an announcement through the public address system providing instructions. Staff, faculty and students will follow the instructions. In case there is no announcement made, the Fire Warden or Deputy Fire Warden should call the fire command station to be given instructions by the Fire Safety Director. In case of an evacuation, the Fire Safety Director will outline any special instructions.
Scenario Two: If there is a visible fire or smoke on the floor and the alarm did not sound, anyone can pull the fire alarm device located by the emergency exits. If at any point you feel unsafe or that your life is in danger in a heavy smoke situation, drop to the floor and move away from the heat and dense smoke to an exit. In a visible fire situation immediately move away from the fire to the nearest exit. Be sure to check the exit door for heat prior to opening it.
1760 Residence Hall (1760 Third Ave.)
Emergency procedures for the Residence Hall can be found on the College’s website and in the Residence Handbook which is distributed to all resident students.
What to do if you see smoke or fire:
- If you do not see a faculty or staff member or cannot pull the alarm, call the Fire Department at 911.
- Do not use the elevators.
- Stay calm. Do not panic. Stay low to the floor in smoke conditions. Close doors to confine fire and smoke.
- Feel doors and do not open them if they are hot to the touch.
