Fashion Merchandising Full-Time and Adjunct Faculty

Dr. Terry Allan Burstein

Chair

Prior to joining LIM College, Dr. Burstein spent 15 years in the fragrance and cosmetic industry working for companies such as Parfums Stern, Calvin Klein Cosmetics Company, and Avon Products, Inc. As Group Brand Manager at Calvin Klein he developed the Escape for Men cologne and ideated the industry blockbuster CK One. At Avon he was Director of Global Marketing and the Global Product Development Center.

Dr. Burstein has won four Fragrance Foundation Awards (Fifi’s) for new product introductions and technological advancements. He’s also been quoted numerous times in The Rose Sheet, an industry publication for toiletries, fragrance, and skin care executives, and he authored “The Fragrance Industry: A Mountain of Mediocrity” for the New York City Economic Development Corporation’s Fashion and Retail Desk. In 2016, his paper “Utilizing the Purdue Creativity Test to Identify Instructors for Research on Preparedness to Foster Creativity in Students” was published in the International Journal of New Technologies in Science and Engineering.

Dr. Burstein holds a Ph.D. in Higher Education Leadership from Northcentral University, a Master of Fine Arts degree in Acting from the Actors Studio Drama School of New School University, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from the University of Bridgeport.

Nancy Miller

Associate Chair

Nancy Miller teaches a variety of undergraduate courses, including, but not limited to, Introduction to the Fashion Business, Textiles, Product Development and Merchandising, and Product Lifecycle Management. At the graduate level she teaches Advanced Fashion Merchandising. She also coordinates the academic offerings and teaches in LIM College’s summer program for high school students, works with adjunct faculty as a course coordinator, and serves as a faculty advisor to students majoring in Fashion Merchandising.

Prior to joining LIM College, Professor Miller enjoyed a career that spanned more than 25 years and included work in textile sales management, apparel merchandising, and product development. Previous positions include Senior Sales Account Manager for the Royal Carolina Corporation and Waverly Textile Processing, Director of Merchandising for Dr. Denton Childrenswear, and Product Manager for Kingly/Bees & Jam, Inc.

A member of the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists and Fashion Group International, Professor Miller was inducted into the Sigma Beta Delta national honor society in 2008 and was the recipient of LIM College’s Award for Teaching Excellence in 2009.

Professor Miller holds a Master of Education degree — with a specialization in Leadership in Higher Education — from Northcentral University, a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing from Syracuse University, and an Associate of Applied Science degree in Fashion Buying and Merchandising from the Fashion Institute of Technology.

Hilda Alfonso

Lecturer

Hilda Alfonso has taught at LIM College since 2009, starting as an adjunct faculty member and becoming a full-time faculty member in 2014. She currently teaches Textiles and the “What’s Trending” elective. 

Professor Alfonso has extensive professional experience in the fashion industry. Most recently, she was a Sales Manager for Ulster Weavers. She has also been a Production Manager for E.S. Sutton, Inc. (Kmart Private Label) and a Production Coordinator for Bentex Group, a company which coordinates licensed apparel for brands including Sesame Street, Disney, and Peanuts.

Professor Alfonso holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Production Management Textiles from the Fashion Institute of Technology. 

Derek Cockle

Assistant Clinical Professor

Derek Cockle is an apparel industry veteran with extensive experience in product development, sourcing, and menswear, and textile design. He teaches several courses, including Applied Concepts in Fashion Merchandising, Textiles, Product Development, Menswear, Accessories, Fashion Magazines, and the Senior Capstone in Fashion Merchandising.

Prior to beginning his academic career, Professor Cockle was the Vice President of Sourcing and Production for Boscorale Operating LLC. He has also designed textiles and menswear for Daewoo International, Pierre Cardin, Bill Blass, Gianfranco Ruffini, and Philips Van Heusen.

Professor Cockle received LIM College's Award for Teaching Excellence in 2013. In 2014, he helped lead LIM’s participation in the KAKEHASHI Project, a student-exchange program promoted by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

He is the recipient of a Master of Arts degree in Textile Design from The Royal College of Art in London, England and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Textile Design from England’s Birmingham College of Art & Design.

Charles Fradella

Lecturer

Charles Fradella has been teaching at LIM College since 2009. He currently teaches Applied Concepts in Merchandising and the Fashion Merchandising Senior Capstone. He has also taught Introduction to the Fashion Business, Product Development, Strategic Brand Management, and Direct Marketing. 

Professor Fradella has extensive domestic and international experience in the fashion industry. His previous positions include Vice President of Sales for the Regal Division of Amerex, Director of Merchandising for Seminole Manufacturing, Account Executive for Thomson Co., Salant Corporation, and Associate Buyer of Men’s Outerwear for J.C. Penney Co.

He’s also been an adjunct professor at Mountbatten Institute – St. Mary’s University Twickenham London, teaching postgraduate courses in Global Business, Principles of Management and Strategic Management.

Professor Fradella holds Bachelor of Science and Master of Business Administration degrees from St. John’s University.

Marla Greene

Clinical Associate Professor

Marla Greene teaches a variety of courses, including Buying and Merchandising Math, Advanced Buying and Planning, and Assortment Planning and Buying Strategies.

Professor Greene has worked in the industry as a Merchandise Manager for Liz Claiborne Outlet Stores and as a Buyer for Bare Necessities, Belk Store Services, and Kids R Us.

She founded and is the faculty advisor for LIM College's chapter of the National Retail Federation Student Association. She also mentors students competing for Fashion Scholarship Fund (FSF) and Geoffrey Beene scholarships. Additionally, Professor Greene played an instrumental role in creating LIM's Retail Buying & Planning track for Fashion Merchandising majors and was the revising author for Mathematics for Retail Buying, 8th edition.

Professor Greene received LIM College’s Award for Teaching Excellence in 2010 and was a President’s Award recipient in 2009. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from the State University of New York at Buffalo and a Master of Business Administration degree in Marketing from Pace University’s Lubin Graduate School of Business. She is a member of the American Collegiate Retailing Association, the National Retail Federation, and the Retail Marketing Society.

Amanda Hallay

Assistant Clinical Professor

Amanda Hallay, MA, is a fashion and cultural historian who has served the LIM College Community since 2008.

Formerly the International Fashion Editor of Couture and Men Mode magazines (and the European Trend Forecaster for The Doneger Group), Professor Hallay creates and supervises Fashion History courses for LIM College’s Fashion Merchandising Department, including Fashion History and Global Attire, Cultural Connections to Fashion, and Street Style.

She is the author of three books and numerous articles concerning Fashion and Cultural History and is the host of YouTube’s popular Ultimate Fashion History Channel. Professor Hallay holds a BA (Hons) in Art History from The American University of Paris, and an MA in Creative Writing from Bath Spa University College.

Sally J. Shapiro

Clinical Assistant Professor

Sally J. Shapiro teaches a variety of courses, including Intro to the Fashion Business, Product Development & Merchandising, Applied Concepts in Merchandising, WebPDM, and the Fashion Merchandising Senior Capstone.

She has extensive experience in both fashion and marketing, including a position as a Menswear Market Specialist for The Doneger Group, where she worked with clients such as Walmart, Sam’s Club, Sears, Nordstrom, and Top Shop. As a Sales Director for Farah Inc.'s Private Label Division, retailers such as Macy's and J. Crew were among her clients.

From 1985-1992 Professor Shapiro served as a Market Specialist and Product Manager for Frederick Atkins, and she’s worked as a Senior Account Manager for Cyrk, Inc., a promotional marketing agency whose clients included PepsiCo and Phillip Morris.

Professor Shapiro is a member of the Direct Marketing Association, the American Marketing Association and Sigma Beta Delta. She holds a Master of Science degree in Integrated Marketing from New York University, as well as a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Business Administration from the State University of New York at New Paltz.
